    I think the point that needs to be made is small property owners probably don’t have any meaningful affect on the deer herd unless they are absolutely slaughtering everything they see. This conversation really applies to folks with larger properties, I would say a minimum of 100 acres or more.

    • @genehalteman882
      @genehalteman882 19 часов назад

      You are absolutely correct. I own 24 acres beside a landowner with 200 acres who shoots very few does. I've counted 34 deer in his 4 acre field at once. Not much I can do.

  • @davidvvv501
    @davidvvv501 День назад

    I know guys in Iowa that have aggressively shot does. They say a real downside is that so many bucks get injured fighting, and they almost all break their racks up. I guess good and bad come from shooting a lot of does .

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke День назад

      I saw that for sure. Tons of fighting, but the overall effect was a net positive. It was not sustainable because of the EHD that came in 2012. I think had that bout of EHD not hit, I could have kept that high buck vs doe ratio for a long time.

    Bill whats the best way to figure how many deer you have per square mile? Hiring a drone. I feel like our deer ratio is in check but its hard to say

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke День назад

      The very best way is to have someone with a thermal drone fly it and count them. Make sure it is legal there first. Second best is to do a trail camera survey per the QDMA guidelines. That is listed on their site and you can find it by google search. It takes time and effort and is pretty accurate. Third best is to guess, but this can be way off base depending on your experience level. I would recommend the thermal drone. That works really well, is super accurate and quick. Good luck.

    Dude they’re terrible my MRO HD green is the worst money I’ve ever spent on an optic. It’s a buy one and cry forever ordeal. I tell people whole heartedly to just stay away from their product the fact they even have to say it works with a 3x magnifier is really bad. The BushNell trs -25 works with a 3x magnifier and that’s about as cheap as it gets ? Why is that even a feature they are naming off? No shake to wake? The dot is just not quality I have no astigmatism. Awful. Absolute garbage poor battery life, my two holosun 510c’s especially my green elite makes this optic a joke in features, quality, battery life. I will never buy another trijicon product again nobody cares that you put acogs on marines setups in Iraq anymore you do nothing to innovate and you over charge. Primary arms acss 3x microprism with their bdc in green is like 6x the prism their acog is and it’s just absolutely smaller and lighter. Trijicon figure it out you’re behind and people who buy your MRO’s like me are shocked at the absolute crap quality. I’ll stick with PA for my micro prisms, holosun for my holographics and a few of my aimpoints. Nice paperweight now the MRO. What a joke.

      No, not as good as the ones that point south, north or east. We saw that when the guy flew my farm with the thermal drone back in March. Bill, at the 1:57 mark, you mentioned Mapbox, and liking the “contour lines” feature. Personally, for my farm, I find Huntstand’s contour features very LACKING! My farm is not “mountainous”, but it does have some good elevation changes. Yet Huntstand’s contour lines are too far apart to show ANY REAL DETAIL!!! I have been in talks with the HuntStand owners and developers about this issue, and hopefully they will do something about it. There are other map apps that show great detail, so I know it is something that can be done about it. It just needs to be implemented!

    • @lonniechartrand
      @lonniechartrand 15 дней назад

      Poor stand location? You have to have a good tree or stand site that may mean you HAVE to cross the trail! With Bill’s example, the scent is crossing the trail only ONCE, and in DIRECT LINE with his stand, and the wind taking the scent down hill. You should have an arrow in the deer before he crosses that point.

    • @fluish6873
      @fluish6873 14 дней назад

      @@lonniechartrand I’ve tried that in the past and it’s usually a doe or a buck I don’t want that walked past me and blows until the spots ruined

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke 14 дней назад

      Ideally, you would sit on the downwind side of that trail right on the edge of the bluff, but in this case those trees are all small cedar trees. I have to cross the trail to get to a tree big enough to hold my stand. As long as you don't touch any brush with your legs, you can get across a trail without leaving scent. Again, I probably should have just shown the stand on the downwind side of that trail for illustration purposes only even though I can't actually hunt there. Good point.

    His science is lacking. Western coyotes have a smorgasbord of young to feed on. Deer , Elk, Bighorn sheep, antelope, and mtn goats all have their young about the same time. You have to take into consideration the recruitment from all these species to draw a proper conclusion. The dryer western climate keeps deer close to water for the summer when the young are still vulnerable giving the coyotes a longer time frame in which to do herd damage. I have 15 does and 5 bucks working my feeders and not a single fawn ha survived 6 weeks.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke 19 дней назад

    Thanks for the kind words Bill. This is an amazing video packed with tons of great knowledge! I will be recommending that all my clients watch this video before and again after we fly to emphasize the importance of everything mentioned.

    Great video Bill. I think the service is most valuable before purchasing as a property. Tells you exactly what you are signing up for!

    Ok Deer Dirt episodes are great especially with Bill BUT the intro music sounds like I'm about to watch a memorial on somebody 😅 change it up. Keep up the series with Bill!

    Can’t fix any food plot when the rains never come. Planting in dust isn’t an option. Strong La Niña is devastating my area again this year. Fourth year in a row that my summer plots and fall plots have failed. This is absolutely ridiculous anymore. Time to abandon food plots and figure something else out from here going forward.

      Man, I hate that for you. I had two years in a row when all my plots failed in southern Iowa too. I also cut back on food plots the third year, but of course it rained that year. It's why I am not a farmer. I hate planting stuff and not having it do well. It is even a bit ironic that I hate planting stuff for the deer to eat and then having them actually eat it!. I guess I just like seeing stuff grow. Fruit trees might be an option you can explore until the weather patterns straighten out. Good luck and have a great day.

    How do you draw those circles in the app around 8 minutes? I cannot find any tool in the app that lets me do that

    • @HuntStand
      @HuntStand 26 дней назад

      That's just from Bill's computer native software. You can use the shape tool instead within the app or webview!

    • @DoveandBranchFellowship
      @DoveandBranchFellowship 26 дней назад

      @HuntStand yeah, that's what I use, funny that Bill doesn't use that in the video though. Probably because it's a pain to draw a circle with it. Don't get me wrong, I like the app and use it daily, but there are two features I'd love to see implemented. 1. A draw on feature in the 3d map. 2. A circle shape tool.

    If clover planted in year 1 and had ok results, what do I do in year 2 to thicken it up? Do I cut down weeds and throw out more clover seed? Do I till up soil and throw down seed? Slightly rake plot to create better seed to soil contact. I am in NC Your thought.

      Clover usually fills in pretty well on its own if you remove the competition. That usually means mowing it sometime during the summer to get rid of other plants. Normally, clover will outcompete the other plants once it gets some sunlight. If this is not the case, then your clover didn't come in well enough and I would then till it under in the late summer (mid-August) and plant it to turnips (or a turnip/radish blend - food plot seed companies sell these) and then broadcast clover back into it in February. The turnips should germinate and take off with just one rain after spreading them on the top of the tilled ground (or you can drag something across the field to very lightly cover them to speed the process). Deer will eat the turnip blends too, so that is a good fix. But, ideally, the clover comes in thicker once you mow it to remove the competition. If you see good response from the clover to mowing, consider fertilizing to give it the best possible head start. Good luck.

    In southern Ohio now and I need rain very bad! I’m spraying gly then I’m going to over seed clove and brassica now. Being a long range food plotter is tough. End of August I’ll be back to seed 3 grains and more brassica. Corn is almost knee high and beans are 4”-6”. I’m trying. Good job. Thank you.

      Scott, thanks for the comment. It is tough to keep up with the tasks (and the weeds) when you can't be at the property every week. You have a good plan though. Good luck.

    Ill b planting my plots in 3-4 wks. Brassicas wheat pea and radishes. And if they fail. My go to is wheat rye and oats

      That is a good plan. I start in the spring with beans in most of those plots hoping that they work out and then I add brassicas in late July and then maybe fall rye in mid-August (if needed). Good luck.
